Today, social media is all about sharing Instagrammable moments, so becoming a travel photographer has become a goal for countless wanderers.

With the ALLMYNE app, you can showcase your travel memories with our journal feature, creating a virtual album—that you can even turn into a physical one! In this article, we give you the top 10 hacks for capturing breathtaking views, getting those perfect Golden Hour selfies, and using editing platforms to give your photos that little oomph!

And travel photography tips don’t just have to be all about which waterfalls and mountains to visit. You can also get memorable photos of the people you meet, the food you eat, and the experiences you have. So, without further ado, let’s look at how you can solidify your memories through a camera.

Tip #1: Pick the Scene That Speaks the Most to You

As someone who loves whipping up various desserts, I have experienced the taste of an angry pie or a sad donut. You can taste the emotions of the baker in what they’ve baked. Being a travel photographer is sort of like that.

If you don’t like what you’re taking a picture of or just aren’t “feeling the vibes” of the scene, then switch it up a bit! Find that perfect view you want to capture and your audience will feel the genuine connection you want to convey.

Tip #2: Learn the Basics

Every skill ever mastered has started at the basics. As a travel photographer, it’s important that you understand how lighting and weather conditions can affect what you’re shooting.

Weather can be unpredictable. Even the weather app is wrong sometimes. Take advantage of heavy rain with how much reflection you’ll be able to get off of streets and buildings.

And if the rain is too much for you, take the chance to get pictures of inside locations like museums and markets.

Tip #3: Frame the Photo

When we look through a window, it’s somewhat exciting because there’s a lot we can’t quite see beyond that window’s view. Apply that to photography.

Look outside a window or doorway, wait, and then take a picture when something comes into view. The idea that there is so much more to be seen truly speaks for itself, creating a uniquely beautiful image.

Tip #4: Angles. Angles. Angles!

You’ve probably seen those travel photographers who crouch and stand on boxes then lean to one side and crouch in a different position. While they look funny on the outside, they are most likely producing fantastic images.

Angles are everything, and you’ll know this if you’ve ever taken a selfie. Everyone knows to keep that camera up high to avoid those beautiful double chins we get when we look down at our cameras. Play with the angles. Take shots that are super close to the object you’re viewing or take a shot that looks straight up at something super tall.

Not everything has to be center-aligned with an expansive background. Get creative with it!

Tip #5: Don’t Forget the People

As mentioned above, people always remember to take pictures of their group, what they ate, and what they saw.

But they usually forget to take photos of the people around them.

After asking for permission, take photos of people in their element. Not only will it create a neat photo, but you might also get a cool story out of it if that person happens to bestow some wisdom on you. Seeing the emotion of an unfamiliar face can be really powerful.

Tip #6: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Okay, this tip refers to leading lines. Have you ever seen a photo of a rainbow? If you’re like me, you probably look to the ends to see if there’s any treasure, I mean, how far the rainbow goes. The same thing happens when there is a path featured in a photo.

You follow it with your eyes, seeing how far out you can get a glimpse of the trail. Then, you start wondering where it leads, which can pave the way for more photos and more stories to tell! Just like in The Wizard of Oz, seeing the proverbial Emerald City on the horizon is just as exciting as the journey itself.

Tip #7: Burst Into Action

If you are a travel photographer and rely heavily on your smartphone, this tip is for you. Use burst mode on your phone’s camera to get effortless candids, especially during moments of active movement like dancing, a parade, or even people walking by.

Everyone is drawn to those photos of friends laughing when it feels that no one is there to witness it. The camera captures the honesty of people and places when it feels unplanned and spontaneous.

Tip #8: It’s Your Golden Hour

Besides being a wonderfully catchy song, the “Golden Hour” is one of the best travel photographer resources you can use in your favor.

Found in the early morning or late afternoon, the Golden Hour is the perfect time to capture the perfect moment. The lighting seems to drape over everything in such a gentle way that you really can’t go wrong with whatever you get a photo of.

Tip #9: Photos, Like Onions, Have Layers

Play around with things being in the fore-, mid-, and backgrounds. Give the photo layers by focusing on something in the photo while blurring the rest.

Maybe you have your friends stand in front of Mt. Fuji, but you make your camera focus on the mountain behind them rather than their smiling faces (sorry, friends!).

The reverse is just as cool. The ghostly illusion of Mt. Fuji in the background can turn into a beautiful photograph you’ll cherish forever.

Tip #10: Do Not Throw Away Your Shot

Our final tip for you is to keep every shot you take. This might seem a bit weird, but photos can always be touched up with simple tools like brightening, sharpening, and playing with color intensity.

It’s true that sometimes that shaky photo of the elephants walking by won’t be a prize winner, but there are plenty of shots that were a bit better that you can work with. I personally never understood the amazing photo capabilities of my phone until I went on a trip and had friends take photos of me. I found that even the overcast day couldn’t dull the scenes in front of me!
