We’d like to introduce you all to our newest ALLMYNE Partner, Alex Patton from the non-profit Plastic Pollution Coalition (PPC). With their mission to create a more sustainable future through eradication of plastic pollution and encouragement of healthy relationships with nature, we are so honored to have them joining us in our endeavors to help the world be greener.
Before we get to some words from Alex himself, let’s talk about what the Plastic Pollution Coalition is all about!
Founded in 2009, a group of people from all walks of life—activists, scientists, artists, and so on—came together to raise awareness about the plastic pollution crisis plaguing our air, water, and soil. Their organization is the first to solely focus on plastic pollution, and it provides a place for different entities, businesses, and individuals to work together to combat the toxic effects of plastic pollution. They accomplish all this through education, connection, and advocacy.
When he got a chance to sit down with Alex, we got to ask him some questions about what you all can expect to see from PPC.
ALLMYNE Partners and Ambassadors can place free mobile ads in our app. Are there any exclusive offers or experiences that users can look forward to through this partnership?
Alex: We regularly host or provide information about events, including free webinars, film screenings, and festivals where people can learn more about how to reduce the amount of plastic they use and why this is so important.
You all are invited to attend PPC’s various local and global, online and in-person events. These events support a circular economy that promotes non-toxic, refillable, and reusable systems. Feel free to check out their events page, as well as their ALLMYNE profile for more information!
Along with PPC’s legislative work, we as individual travelers can choose sustainable solutions when journeying that will help us preserve our planet. If you want to know what sustainable travel looks like, you can check out our blog post here.
What are your future goals and projects you’re excited about, and how might they align with ALLMYNE’s goals?
Alex: Generally speaking, for the next several years, we are focusing on telling the true story of plastic and advancing systemic solutions in businesses, cultures, and policies so that we are measurably closer to creating a more just and equitable world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impacts. More specifically, a couple of our key projects include Filtered not Bottled, through which we advocate for the distribution of point-of-use filters, not single-use plastic bottles, in the many communities impacted by toxic lead pipes.
This project offers education, recommendations for change, and ways that we can all take action. You can also expect to see a journal on this initiative in the app!
Alex: Another one of our projects is our Flip the Script on Plastics campaign. We use the power of pop culture to influence consumers around the world and bring about changes in behavior and attitudes. Activities like toxic tours—where we show film and TV writers the toxic impacts of petrochemical and plastic production in Los Angeles—as well as writers’ room consultations and plastic-free short film contests help us educate Hollywood professionals on the realities of plastic’s endless toxic existence so that they can tell impactful stories and make changes on set.
We also recommend that all you movie-buffs settle down with some popcorn and watch their webinar called “Greening Hollywood Sets to Flip the Script on Plastics.”
The Last Plastic Straw is another project PPC has. They give you 30 alternatives to plastic straws, videos on plastic straws’ impact on marine life, and ways you can take action, like reaching out to your local eateries to ask them to make the switch to non-plastic straw options.
Here are some other resources and tools that PPC and their partners have to get us all on the right track:
- The Understanding Packaging (UP) Scorecard: This resource helps concert and sports venues, restaurants, and other businesses choose plastic-free and sustainable packaging for food and drinks. This tool allows companies to better understand packaging and choose the most sustainable option instead of single-use plastic.
- Global Plastic Laws: This website is a database of all the plastic legislation that has been passed around the world.
- Hannah4Change: This links you to Hannah Testa, an environmental, animal, climate change, ocean health, plastic pollution, and organic lifestyle activist! Her work is extraordinary, especially given her age. Through her site, you can get involved in various ways or even request her to come speak at one of your events.
Finally, what specific content, services, or resources will you be providing through the ALLMYNE app?
Alex: I think in the future we would love to provide resources on how to reduce the use of plastic while traveling. For example, you can replace plastic toothbrush holders with ones made from alternative materials such as bamboo.
PPC also has an online store you can check out. They will be working with us to create a list of non-plastic travel solutions, which will be available to purchase on the app soon. So make sure you download it in order to get a jump on those items! While you’re there, go to Plastic Pollution Coalition’s profile here and see what they’re up to.
