Aloha and Happy National Hawaii Day! This celebration of the islands’ rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring spirit.

From ancient navigation and royal legacies to unforgettable food and modern adventures, Hawaii Day invites us to honor the past, experience the present, and appreciate what makes Hawaii truly one of a kind.

Without further ado, let’s jump right in and figure out what makes Hawaii Day a truly special date!

What Is Hawaii Day? A Look at Hawaii’s Statehood and Culture

Started in 2015 to honor Hawaii becoming the 50th state, National Hawaii Day is celebrated across its eight islands: Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niʻihau, and Kahoolawe.

Located 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland, Hawaii was a U.S. Naval base during Pearl Harbor before it became a proper state. It has its own time zone, is the most diverse state in the United States, and is the only state located outside North America. It is also the only state that’s an archipelago, or group of islands, with its own language called Ōlelo Hawaiʻi.

The Early History of Hawaii and Its Monarchs

The first Hawaiians came to the islands by navigating the stars. Paradise can never be untouched; so as is common in history, colonizers came. In 1778, European Captain James Cook arrived in Kauai. When he returned, he was killed by the Polynesians inhabiting the island.

This defeat allowed the beloved King Kamehameha to rule over all the islands starting in 1795. Despite his death in 1819, Hawaiians celebrate him every June 11th with parades. A year following his death, Western civilizations brought diseases that killed roughly 200,000 Hawaiians.

The Fall of the Hawaiian Kingdom

King Kalākaua replaced Kamehameha in 1874 and would become the first ever monarch to travel around the world. He toured the globe in 1881 for diplomatic purposes.

The last ruler of Hawaii was Queen Lili’uokalani who was imprisoned in the 1890s. She penned Hawaii’s song “Aloha Oe.” The Kingdom of Hawaii was soon overthrown by Americans and Europeans in 1893. Having control of the economy, they made it the Republic of Hawaii.

The loss of the Hawaiian Kingdom did not mark the end of Hawaiian identity, but it set the beginning of a long fight to preserve it. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and officially became a U.S. territory before achieving statehood in 1959.

While modern Hawaii thrives as a global travel destination, the echoes of its past remain deeply felt. Native Hawaiian culture, language, and traditions have endured despite displacement and political tension. Today, revitalization efforts ranging from Hawaiian language immersion schools to cultural festivals continue to honor the islands’ roots.

Hawaii Day stands as both a celebration and a reminder of resilience, sovereignty, and pride of this wonderful state and its contributions to the American identity.

Hawaiian Food to Try on Hawaii Day

Hawaiian cuisine is a reflection of the islands themselves: layered, multicultural, and deeply connected to the land and sea.

Influenced by Polynesian roots and waves of Asian, American, and European settlers, the food tells Hawaii’s story in every bite. Staples like taro, fresh fish, pork, coconut, and tropical fruits highlight a tradition of sustainability, simplicity, and respect for nature.

Eating in Hawaii is such a cultural and exquisitely culinary experience. The top five dishes to try in Hawaii are the following:

  • Poi (steamed/baked taro root paste)
  • Laulau (pork wrapped in taro leaves cooked in an underground rock oven)
  • Kalua pig (slow-roasted pork similar to American pulled pork)
  • Poke (Hawaiian version of Japanese sashimi; instead of sliced raw fish, it is cubed)
  • Lomi Salmon (salted raw salmon with diced tomatoes, onions, and chilis)

Things to Do in Hawaii: Adventures and Excursions

And of course, no article on Hawaii can leave out the beautiful sights to be seen and excursions to enjoy while visiting.

Exploring Hawaii with a local guide transforms a great trip into an unforgettable one. Locals know where the crowds thin out, when the whales migrate, and which hidden valleys hold the most breathtaking views.

A personalized itinerary means traveling at your pace, honoring cultural practices, and experiencing the islands beyond the postcard moments. Whether it’s a sunrise hike, a family-owned farm tour, or a secluded snorkeling spot, local insight makes all the difference.
