In 1997, co-founders Mari Kuraishi and Dennis Whittle held an event at the World Bank for nonprofits in need. When they left the World Bank to start the worldโs first crowdfunding organization in 2002, GlobalGiving was born. GlobalGiving connects nonprofits with donors and companies. โSince 2002, [GlobalGiving has] helped raise more than $847 million from 1,752,694 people like you whoโve supported 34,769 projects in 175+ countries.โ Their mission is โto transform aid and philanthropy to accelerate community-led change,โ and they do so by working toward their vision of โunleashed potential of people to make positive change happen.โ
They have an extensive vetting process for all nonprofits that partner with them to make sure theyโre โperforming charitable work in a transparent and accountable manner.โ Each nonprofit must meet local government registration requirements and be compliant with international guidelines for philanthropy, as well as anti-terror laws set out by the Treasury Department. GlobalGiving researches a nonprofitโs previous funders, legal documents and financial records, program materials, and a list of all members.ย
Following admission to a partnership with GlobalGiving, organizations submit a quarterly project report that is emailed out to all donors. Donors can see where their money is being spent and how far along the project is. This research reoccurs every two years and is coupled with a representative from GlobalGiving visiting the nonprofit in person. Nonprofits who partner with GlobalGiving get a fundraising page, access to corporate partnerships, training and support, credibility and visibility, and disaster support.
So, what exactly makes GlobalGiving different from other companies? Well, they find a way to keep donors, sponsors, and nonprofits satisfied. Besides their vetting process to ensure legitimacy of nonprofits they work with, they match donations and allow a donor to re-allocate their donations at any time to a new project of their choosing. There are no hidden costs for nonprofits to join them, and they even provide tools, training, and resources to nonprofits in order for them to succeed. Finally, theyโre the only fundraising company that offers 501c3 equivalency and UK Gift Aid benefits.
ALLMYNE wants to highlight this organization this month and just in time for an event GlobalGiving will be holding!
