With a new puppy in my house, I can’t help but search for all the cute dog-friendly vacations I’ll be able to take him, starting with this summer. It got me thinking. I know lots of people with dogs, so why not share my research with the rest of you.

Before we begin, here is a phenomenal resource for pet-friendly hotels around the world.

Without further ado, let’s see what the United States has in store for dog and puppy owners alike! Disclaimer: This list will not include national parks, where our four-legged friends are usually welcome.

#1. Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Lauded as the most dog-friendly location in all of America, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California—or Carmel—has plenty for you and your pooch to do! But one of the most noteworthy stops you should add to your itinerary is the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop, the first and only bike shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

With locations in Monterey and Santa Barbara as well, this shop offers tours, merchandise, and rentals of bicycles that are handcrafted in Europe. So, strap your Shorkie into one of their removable sidecars and head out on the town – dog-friendly vacations don’t get much cooler than this coastal cruise!

#2. Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Vermont

This stop easily tops the list for nature-loving pups on dog-friendly vacations. There is, unsurprisingly, plenty to do on Dog Mountain for pups.

Even if your Dachshund doesn’t want to take on the hiking trails, they can take part in running, playing, meeting other dogs, and swimming. On top of that, Dog Mountain has tons of cute events like Dog Parties and the Music on the Mountain event. You can also spend time shopping at the Stephen Huneck Gallery or visiting the Dog Chapel.

#3. Boozehounds in Palm Springs, California

“Where dogs bring their humans” is the slogan of this joint. This is the best place to stop for you and your dog to eat. Dogs have their pick of gazpacho, loaded sweet potatoes, and a TV dinner amongst other delicious dishes.

Pair your food with something from their long drink menu. You can also bring your Hound to happy hour Fridays to Sundays from 3-6 p.m. There are drag shows on Sundays at 2 p.m., which you can register for here.

#4. Oliver Bentleys Historic Dog Walk Tour in Savannah, Georgia

Oliver Bentleys is more than just a place for you to share delicious biscuits with your favorite dog. They also offer a historic tour through Savannah’s Historic District.

You’ll get a chance to visit seven of their twenty-two squares, including Columbia Square. With dozens of photo opportunities for your Pug, you’d be remiss to not bring a camera or two! This tour is quite accessible, as it is only a mile in length and lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can get a tour all year long at 9 a.m. or at 4:30 p.m. from October to May. Children and dogs partake for free, so it’s a must-try for culture lovers who want history and tail wags rolled into one dog-friendly vacation.

#5. Pet Friendly Dog Bakery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The title speaks for itself, but the Pet Friendly Dog Bakery is known for its custom dog cakes, Barkday celebrations, and puppy training classes.

They have a major Instagram presence, so you should check them out there, especially for the cute dog customer photos! Treat your Terrier to treats galore, where friendliness and baked goodliness meet in one place. All dog-friendly vacations should include a bakery stop, and this one’s the icing on the cake.

#6. MUTTS Canine Cantina in Dallas, Texas

Flavorful food, delicious drinks, and playful puppies. What more could one ask for? Frenchies, Greyhounds, and Huskies are more than welcome to join countless other dogs at their off-leash dog park, while the puppy parents relax.

This is one of few places where it’s okay for your dog to eat off your plate! You can buy a day pass to get the full experience and spend the day sipping on craft beer. Something to know before you go, your four-legged friend must be:

  • Spayed/Neutered
  • Not overly aggressive
  • Flea and tick free
  • Up to date with their vaccinations, including rabies, DHLPPC, and Bordetella

This is so all dogs can be safe while you stay carefree. In short, if you’re into relaxed, social settings, MUTTS proves that dog-friendly vacations can be as fun for the humans as they are for the pets.

#7. Mendocino Grove in Mendocino, California

This one is for all those people out there who love the idea of camping but not the actual “tent on the ground with bugs flying everywhere” type of camping.

Aptly called “glamping,” Mendocino Grove offers tents, campfires, bathhouses, and a camp spa for the humans. For the dogs, they provide a dog bed and bowl in your room of choice.

They also have a dog wash station with hot water, shampoo, and towels, along with a dog park. They request that only dogs over the age of 1 come to the campground. Let your Shih-poo share a hammock with you, as you enjoy watching the beautiful sunset.

Attention glampers, this is one of the most luxurious dog-friendly vacations you and your furball can book!

#8. Canine Camp Getaway in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania or East Durham, New York

We’ll start with the all-inclusive experience in Gettysburg. You’ll stay at the Eisenhower Hotel during one of their camp events. One is April 13-17, and the other is June 1-5. In June, you can enjoy diving off the dock, and both weeks allow for your dog to play in the hotel pool or traverse the vast space of the hotel grounds. This camp is five days and four nights.

For New York, you’ll be staying at the Blackthorne Resort. At this camp, you both can check out the gazebos, duck pond, and outdoor pool. This event is from September 25 to 28.

At both camp getaways, you and your Cocker Spaniel can enjoy activities like:

  • Barks & Crafts
  • Costume Contests
  • Canine Freestyle Dancing
  • Karaoke
  • Movie Night Under the Stars
  • Parkour
  • Water Games
  • Yappy Hour

You can learn more about their accommodations and rates at this link.

#9. Dinosaur World in Plant City, Florida

Want to put your Doberman’s toughness to the test? Walk them through this outdoor museum featuring 150+ life-size dinosaurs.

With the exception of the museum with animatronics, leashed dogs are welcome through the entire park. Make sure you get a snapshot of your pup’s reaction to the sights and sounds of T-Rexes and Pterodactyls!

If your idea of dog-friendly vacations includes summer camp nostalgia and wagging tails, this one’s a dream come true.

#10. The Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City, Michigan

Scenic strolls and small-town charm make this a hidden gem for relaxed dog-friendly vacations.

The Village is not only a thriving, multi-generational residential community but also a place where dogs can enjoy the Mercato. Many merchants are known to keep treats behind the counter for your fluffy Fido.

There are also some hidden hiking trails for those who are the most adventurous. Enjoy the historic charm of the Grand Traverse Commons, where you’re sure to find a souvenir to take home with you.
