If you live and breathe for the waves, then you know that Portugal holds a special place in the hearts of surfers worldwide. The blend of pristine beaches, perfect swells, insane food culture, cold brews, and an infectious surf culture makes it a true slice of paradise on Earthโ€”especially if your version of paradise includes a perfect beach break! In simple terms, the rustic coastline of Portugal has some of the most exhilarating surf on the planet. So, weโ€™re paying homage to one of the worldโ€™s top surf meccas by handpicking five stops you have to make on your hunt for the best waves. But like any pursuit worth its salt, finding the ultimate waves requires a bit of planning and perhaps a few insider tips from a local or two. We’re taking you on a trip to explore the charming coastal towns, sleepy villages, and surf capitals that dot the Portuguese shoreline. Let’s paddle out!

Portugal is one of the most iconic nations in the Old Continent, yet it has a surprisingly rugged and unexplored side. If you donโ€™t believe it, just ask any surfer who has been lucky enough to ride some of the countryโ€™s world-class waves. This is especially true in Peniche, which may just be the single best place for surfers who want to see perfect 10-foot barrels almost daily.ย ย

Peniche Surf: As World-Class as It Gets

Do you want to know just how world-class Peniche waves actually are? There are many different beaches you can access from Peniche, but the most famous one is called Supertubos. And if that name sounds familiar, itโ€™s because youโ€™ve likely heard about it. After all, itโ€™s usually one of the last stops in the World Surfing Circuit; so the winner of the tournament also has a huge impact on global rankings. As we mentioned though, you can choose to visit many close by beaches that are not as rough. Or, what we suggest you do, is visit Peniche in summer when the weather is beautiful and the waves are not as big or strong. This way, you still get to surf great waves and enjoy many of the townโ€™s activities that are not available during winter.ย

Tips for Beginners in Peniche

If youโ€™re a beginner trying to hone your skills, the Supertubos beach may not be the friendliest. But, fret not as you can always opt for either the north or south beach in Baleal, a small town located next to Peniche. This is where most surf academies take beginner surfers because the waves and currents are not that strong, but you still get to experience magnificent Peniche at its finest.ย

Is Peniche a Fun City?

Peniche is a relatively small city, but it has several universities; and itโ€™s surrounded by natural attractions. The combination of both makes it a fun location for people of all agesโ€”especially if you want to hang out with other people who love to surf. Who knows, you may even find yourself a crew and hang out with friends while youโ€™re out in the water! There are dozens of fun activities in Peniche including a water park that operates at the peak of summer as well as:

The Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse

The Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse is a viewpoint that looks at the North Atlantic Sea. It provides an imposing view that centuries ago was taken for the edge of the world. And even though you know better, you will find yourself agreeing with that notion after you visit.

Papรดa Peninsula and Da Luz Fort

Papรดa Peninsula is located on the north of the island, and it consists of breathtaking rock formations that protrude from the water, creating natural towers that are now populated with greenery and footpaths. Itโ€™s undoubtedly one of the most peaceful places on the island, so make time to visit it in between sessions.ย

Selina, the Surfers Lodge and the Waterfront Venues

If you want to find fun events with live performances and dance music, we recommend that you look at what Selina and the Surferโ€™s Lodge have to offer. Likewise, you should check out the many venues located in Penicheโ€™s waterfront. Thereโ€™s always some good fun going on there, even if itโ€™s in the form of a chill pizza and movie night.ย

Activities Around Peniche

If youโ€™re staying long enough, youโ€™ll probably want to check out nearby activities such as:

  • Berlengas Islandโ€”a stunning natural reserve that you can travel to via ferry!
  • Lourinhaโ€™s Dinosaur Museumsโ€”the whole town is home to 400+ archeological sites.ย
  • Ericeira, Santa Cruz, and Sintraโ€”cities and towns located an hour away or less, all of which have their own list of awesome things going for them!

Planning Your Trip to Supertubos and Other Beaches

You donโ€™t have to speak Portuguese or know a local surfer to plan a trip to Peniche! ALLMYNE allows you to reach out and connect with local guides that not only know Peniche but can also build an entire itinerary of activities designed specifically for you and your friends. Whatโ€™s more, you can even use the app to take and store pictures, write notes, make drawings, and have all of these printed into a high-resolution photo album in just a few taps.ย ย

Ready to Experience Peniche at Its Fullest?

Peniche is an amazing choice for surfers who are itching for a new challenge. And although beginners need to be a bit more conscious of where they start, Baleal is the perfect place for all levels of surf, making these neighboring towns arguably the best surfing duo in Portugal. Whether in the water or while exploring Peniche, you donโ€™t have to take on this new adventure all on your own. You can organize your trip with a local guide using ALLMYNE; and if you manage to connect with a fellow surfer, you may even have a familiar face with you while waiting for the best wave to come in.ย
