If you live and breathe for the waves, then you know that Portugal holds a special place in the hearts of surfers worldwide. The blend of pristine beaches, perfect swells, insane food culture, cold brews, and an infectious surf culture makes it a true slice of paradise on Earthโespecially if your version of paradise includes a perfect beach break! In simple terms, the rustic coastline of Portugal has some of the most exhilarating surf on the planet. So, weโre paying homage to one of the worldโs top surf meccas by handpicking five stops you have to make on your hunt for the best waves. But like any pursuit worth its salt, finding the ultimate waves requires a bit of planning and perhaps a few insider tips from a local or two. We’re taking you on a trip to explore the charming coastal towns, sleepy villages, and surf capitals that dot the Portuguese shoreline. Let’s paddle out!
If you have ever researched the biggest waves ever surfed, then you’re probably familiar with the small town of Nazare. And if not, donโt worry; this article will tell you everything you need to know about visiting this hidden Portuguese diamond. Continuing with our Best Surf Stops in Portugal series, weโre covering the picturesque town of Nazare, a small fishing village thatโs also known for having one of the gnarliest surf seasons in the Old Continent. As a matter of fact, the largest wave surfed off of a shore break was recorded in Nazare, and itโs common for surfing daredevils to try to set a new mark on a regular basis. Are you a surfer looking for the best waves in Portugal? Look no further and letโs dive deep into one of the European Peninsula’s top surf spots.
Nazare Waves: More than a Mythical Show
As of this writing, the record for the biggest surfed wave is a stunning 86 feet (shout out to German surf legend Sebastian Steudtner who set it back in 2020), and it happened in Nazare. However, Nazare has waves for surfers of all ages and levels! You can catch waves at the legendary Praia Nord or North Beach, the same place where the world record was set. While you wonโt have to take your chances against 80-foot barrels every day, keep in mind that this beach has a powerful current so you should only take on the challenge if youโre supremely confident in your skills. North Beach is located a short, 10-minute drive away from Nazare Center. If you want to warm up by hiking before hitting the water, you can always trek up and over the Sitio neighborhood that overlooks the city, then come down the other side to Praia Nord. If you choose to walk, it should take you around 45 minutes to get there.ย ย
Should Beginners Surf in Nazare?
As we mentioned earlier, Nazareโs surf scene is ideal for all types of surfers. With that said, North Beach is known for its strong current and above-average wave sizes. If youโre a beginner rider, youโre better off staying at Nazare beach (also known as Praia da Vila) where waves are much smaller but still provide good conditions for beginners to polish their skills. Likewise, Praia de Sul is another spot preferred by beginners, but note that local surfers see it as an inconsistent choice.ย
A Taste of Nazareโs Best Activities
Youโll have at least two sessions per day, but what will you do the rest of the time? Donโt worry, Nazare has you covered.ย
Food in the Whole CityโEven the Big Wave Viewpoint!
Whether itโs on the beachfront, at the local weekend markets, or at the top of the cliffs overlooking the town, youโll always have great food available in Nazare. Our special tip: try the Bacalhau ร Brรกs, a cod and potato-based local specialty from this region.ย
Relaxing Beach Days
It doesnโt matter which one you choose, all the beaches in Nazare have a natural, rugged beauty to them. Theyโre the perfect place to hitch your hammock between a couple of trees, unplug, and work on your tan.ย
The Funicular, Trekking Paths, Lighthouse and Fortress Museum
Nazareโs funicular connects the center to the Sitio neighborhood, located atop the hill that overlooks the town. This in itself is a fun and entertaining activity as the funicular offers unique views while cutting the trek time to a few minutes. Once at the top, youโll be met by a maze of amazing natural paths that wrap around the cliffs and coves. At the most western point of the cliffs youโll find the Nazare viewpoint and lighthouse, which now operates as a museum dedicated, in part, to the surfing of the big wave.ย
